ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 🐠

The Great Barrier Reef shows measurable coral recovery

  • Coral coverage increased in the northern Great Barrier Reef and held steady across most of the rest

  • A late monsoon brought cloud cover that limited heat stress, giving corals room to start recovering

  • Water temperatures were still above average, and scientists say the recovery window is narrowing

To understand why this news matters, you first need to know what coral bleaching actually is. Corals get their color from tiny algae called zooxanthellae that live inside their tissues and provide them with food through photosynthesis. When water temperatures rise even slightly above normal for a sustained period, corals expel those algae in stress, turning ghostly white. Without the algae, they're not just pale, they're starving. If the heat doesn't let up, they die.

By 2024, large sections of the reef had experienced significant bleaching pressure, and the outlook was genuinely worrying.

So here's the good news: monitoring data has shown meaningful coral recovery in parts of the reef following a period of cooler sea surface temperatures. When heat stress lifts in time, corals can recover — and in some areas, coral coverage has increased noticeably. It's a reminder that the reef is not a lost cause. It still has the biological resilience to bounce back if it gets the conditions it needs.

What this tells us is that the reef retains the biological capacity to heal itself, but only under the right conditions. Scientists are consistent on this: recovery is possible, but not guaranteed, and it depends heavily on how aggressively the world reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Each mass bleaching event that's avoided gives the reef another chance. Each fraction of a degree of warming that's prevented adds recovery time. The reef is fighting, and right now, in some corners, it's winning.

A personalized mRNA cancer vaccine shows major results in a phase III trial

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. When caught early, it's very treatable — but once it spreads, the options narrow fast. Even after surgery, there's always the fear of recurrence, and for high-risk patients, that fear is well founded.

For years, researchers have been asking whether the mRNA technology that proved so effective in COVID-19 vaccines could be turned against cancer. Now, for the first time at phase III scale, the answer appears to be yes.

The vaccine is called intismeran, developed jointly by Moderna and Merck. What makes it genuinely different is that it's personalized. Each dose is manufactured specifically for one patient, based on the unique genetic mutations found in their tumor. The idea is to teach the immune system to recognize and attack those specific cancer cells — the same basic logic behind mRNA vaccines, but targeted to an individual's cancer rather than a virus.

The phase III trial results showed that patients who received intismeran alongside the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab had a significantly reduced risk of melanoma recurrence compared to those who received pembrolizumab alone.

This is a landmark result!

Phase III trials are the final and most rigorous stage of clinical testing, so success here carries real weight. Personalized cancer vaccines have been theorized for a long time. Seeing them work at this level of evidence is a genuine step forward, and researchers believe this approach could eventually be applied to other cancer types too.

Scientists have mapped the planet's underground fungal networks for the first time

There is an entire world operating below the surface of the soil that most of us never think about. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are one of the most important life forms on Earth, and until recently, nobody had a clear picture of where they are and how abundant they are across the globe.

These fungi form symbiotic relationships with the roots of most land plants — the plant provides carbon, the fungi provide phosphorus and other nutrients. It's one of the oldest biological partnerships on the planet, going back hundreds of millions of years.

Under the Earth’s soil is roughly 110 quadrillion kilometers of AM fungi. If you lined up all this fungi, it would go all the way to Pluto and back – more than 9 million times.

Beyond feeding plants, these fungi play a role in carbon storage. When carbon moves from plant roots into fungal networks and then into the surrounding soil, it can stay locked there for significant periods. In a world where reducing atmospheric carbon is urgent, healthy fungal networks are essential.

The new global map was built from thousands of soil samples analyzed across different ecosystems, combined with computational modeling to produce a worldwide view of AM fungal distribution.

For the first time, land managers, farmers, and conservationists have a baseline to work from. They can see where these networks are thriving and where they've been degraded by intensive agriculture or land clearance.

That's useful knowledge. Restoration efforts that account for fungal health are likely to be far more effective than those that don't, and this map is the foundation that makes that possible.
